April 26 Program: Top FHTC Graduates
Lisa Kirmer is organizing the recognition of the top Flint Hills Technical College graduates.
Top Five Percent off EHS Seniors Recognized
Eight Emporia High School graduating seniors attended our Rotary
Club meeting as we recognized the top 5% of the senior class. Dr. Britton Hart, EHS Principal, said that the 229 graduating seniors are one of the smallest graduating classes in many years. Two have been named National Merit Scholars.

Twitter entry from Britton Hart, Emporia High School Principal:

Thks to the Rotary Club 4 recognizing our Seniors in the top 5%! Great group of hard working students! #TeamEHS

Dirty Kanza 200 Check Point #3 in Madison
Our club's participation in the Dirty Kanza 200 will be passing out water on the course at check point #3 in Madison from 1:00 to 3:30 in the afternoon. Please sign up at an upcoming meeting. It is fun to be out on the course with the athletes, which this location provides as they arrive from Eureka after approximately 150 miles on the trail. At this time, we'll see the leading athletes on the course as they prepare for the final leg of their adventure.
Rotary Club Membership Drive
On June 7th, the winner will receive $100 in Chamber Bucks.

Each time a new member is inducted into Rotary, the sponsoring Rotarian will have his or her name entered into the drawing. The more members you bring in, the more chances of winning the drawing. First place will get $100, second place will get $50 and third place will get $25. We have a lot of great projects to accomplish and we need members. New member proposals with the breakdown of dues are available from every board member. Remember, new members get reduced meal prices for a limited time.

Benefits of membership:
  • Great friendships
  • Awesome networking
  • Interesting programs
  • A feeling of accomplishment in our community, state and the world.
Doing good feels good. Think of it like this...Yes, you pay for your meals even though you may not be able to attend every week, but that money goes toward the funding of some amazing projects!

NRH Foundation - Raising Funds for Hyperbaric Oxygen Treatment
Dr. Tim Harris, representing Newman Regional Health along with Paul Quin and Emily Dieker, told our club about the many uses of hyperbaric oxygen treatment. It is especially useful with wound care, and aids in healing with intensively introducing oxygen to inflamed tissues. This treatment is one piece of wound care that is missing here in Emporia, and would be an asset to our hospital in partnership with vascular disease and the cardiology clinic. Patients with vascular disease, bone infections, radiation burns, and diabetic foot ulcers would find this treatment useful. Some people would be in danger of losing a limb without this type of facility. Fund raising is underway through the NRH Foundation through 2016 and into 2017. It is hoped that $400,000 could be raised in order to acquire the equipment by the fourth quarter of 2017.

ESU Track & Field
Emporia State University track & field coach Steve Blocker told our Rotary Club how he and his coaches make the most of the athletes who they have. They attract student athletes with good work ethics and accomplish a lot of hard work to excel in the MIAA and in the NCAA Division II, and have high expectations this year. The men's 4x400 relay team earned 6th place in the NCAA Division II Indoor Championships this winter without their best runners participating.

ESU's opening meet this spring attracted over 1,100 participants. Their next meet is an evening event scheduled for May 14. A new track is being installed as part of the new football field in Welch Stadium. Watch for a possible gold-colored track with black lines and lettering.

Erin Blocker: Alzheimer Dissertation
Erin Blocker, assistant track & field coach at ESU, shared that as part of her dissertation she is beginning medical research in Emporia as a rural community project to promote high-intensity physical activity as an intervention for people with a high risk for Alzheimer disease. Erin is looking for 25-30 participants over 50 years of age over a period of time of 10 weeks.

We welcome Clint Stephens as a new member of our Rotary Club. Thanks for joining us, Clint.

Dirty Kanza Participation
A decision will be made soon of our club's participation in the Dirty Kanza 200 event. During the last several years, we have had fun providing food along the finish line area on Commercial Street on Saturday evening.

With the expanding number of bicyclists participating in the events on that day, we have been informed that we would be more helpful to their needs for the overall event if we could help them by passing out water on the course at check point #3 from 1:00 to 3:30 in the afternoon. Although our participation in this way would not lend to much visibility to others in our community that day, it would definitely lead to a greater feel for the event for our club members by being out on the course with the athletes.

Mike Hutfles - Rotary Exchange
Mike Hutfles, a visitor to our club brought by Don Hill, informed our Rotary Club of his daughter's current participation as a Rotary exchange student at Reunion Island, an insular region of France located in the Indian Ocean with a population of about 845,000.
