Our Rotary Club has committed $25,000 to Mission Madagascar, the new lemur exhibit. We have been holding the funds for them after several years of fund raising. This new exhibit is finally getting the total funding that it needs to proceed with construction. Come to the dedication where we will present our $25,000 check.
Ken Buchele and Jim Wayman were recognized by Sam Purohit for their contributions with a beautiful framed collection of various coins and currency denominations of India.
Our club sponsored two Emporia High students to RYLA this summer. Emma Persinger and Colton Wellnitz attended our district's RYLA for five days at the University of Kansas. Colton attended our club meeting, and told our club about his experience. In addition to working on a group case study, Colton had the opportunity to do service work at the community food bank in Lawrence and visited the Dole Institute. He had fun meeting and interacting with students from other countries in the Rotary Youth Exchange Program.
What did he learn?
Colton said that he learned to see people for who they are and how other people can contribute to society.
Stand for something.
Community service is important.
A desire to change the world.
Although Emma could not attend our club meeting since she was helping with the debate team, she wrote a note saying what she gained from her RYLA experience:
Inspiration
Enhancement of her future
Helped show her new and different opportunities
Helped her plan for her future
Leadership skills that will help her in the future in the workforce
Our Rotary Club has donated three Little Free Libraries to be installed in Emporia. Jami Reever has taken the lead in this project. The libraries are in the hands of Big Brothers Big Sisters who is painting them for us. The United Way of the Flint Hills has identified potential sites for the libraries. Little Free Libraries donated a starter pack of 150 books. Jami plans to have a book drive at Rotary so we have an assortment of books to stock the libraries with over time. Members of our club will help install the libraries when they are ready in a few weeks.
