The Emporia elementary school principals will be on hand at our Rotary Club meeting this Tuesday for the presentation of the dictionaries to the third graders in Emporia. If you can join the group of Rotarians during all or part of the distribution of dictionaries from 1:00 to 3:15 after the club meeting, please do so. This is one of the great things that our club does every year.
At our November 5th Rotary Club board meeting, it was decided to be the chartered organization under the umbrella of the Boy Scouts of America to sponsor the summer activities for Riverside and Village Schools first through fifth graders at Girl Scout Camp EE. This program has most recently operated under the Summer Scape Program within the Emporia Recreation Commission. 120 kids participated this past summer. It as run in an unofficial manner by a joint partnership of the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts under the leadership of Rotarian Alex Mosakowski. Alex made a proposal to our board for our Rotary Club to become an official chartered organization in order for them to run this program for the kids under the Boy Scouts of America. It is similar to a church (or a Rotary Club) being a chartered organization for a boy scout troop, which is very common. Our Rotary Club doesn't have any additional leadership obligation to run the program unless we choose to do so in the future, and the Boy Scouts of America provides the liability insurance for the program.
Lyon County Deputy Jacob Welsh talked about the community policing programs at the Lyon County Sheriff Department. One of those programs is the Offender Watch program. The Lyon County Sheriff Department is part of a nationwide database tracking registered offenders. There are 160-170 registered offenders shown on the Lyon County website. Notifications can be sent to those wanting them whenever a registered offender moves into your neighborhood. Go to: http://communitynotification.com/counties.php?state=ks.
The department is also active in schools, and if offering Citizens Academy with the Emporia Police Department and Fire Department for 10-11 weeks.
The picture shows two of the three Little Libraries that have been put together and painted, thanks to Jamie Reever and company. We look forward to positioning these in several places around Emporia so people can borrow books. At our board meeting it was discussed to narrow down the locations for these libraries to Las Casitas Park, C of E Park and the Lyon County Health Department.
For our program on October 27th, Carl Antes, talked about the art of beekeeping. Carl is a beekeeper and explained a lot about the world of bees. Carl explained the life cycle of a colony of bee's. The queen bee is the leader in each hive. Each hive consists of the Queen bee, drone bees and worker bees. Honey is the result of a very complex set of circumstances that occur with in the hive.

Emporia Rotarian Marshall Miller continues to work wonders serving the needs for the SOS Safe House. Continuing where he left off with our Rotary Club project recently, Marshall has repaired a door in the breezeway, fixed a toilet, assembled a new storage cabinet, adjusted a door latch so that it will latch property when closed, and he and Ken Buchele attached art work to their wall. Thanks, Marshall and Ken for seeing a need and doing it!
Our Rotary Club made a $25,000 donation to Mission Madagascar, the new lemur exhibit at the David Traylor Zoo during a dedication held last week at the zoo. After several years of successful fund raising to fund a goal set by our club, the donation coincides with the start of construction for the new exhibit after getting the total funding needed.
